(Example
of Foiling on an art Mat. There are a couple more below too.)
Here I'll use an art mat for a child's picture (5 x 7 mat, 3 X 5 opening). The child's name and a design like a Wild Anamals footprints will be added as accents. There are two methods of transfer, Method 1 - Using T-shirt Press and Method 2 - Using Hand Foiling Iron. The process is symilar regardless of what you are foiling, an Art Mat, Glass, or a wood frame.
Method 1 - Using T-shirt Press
Note: I have best success using a swing away style press.
1) Using Adventures In Names or Adventures In Art,
print design and text on Toner Transfer Paper, in reverse (flipped), on
a standard laser printer with Toner Density set high.
2) Place the mat on T-shirt press and place Toner Transfer over mat
with toner toward the mat.
3) Press for three seconds at medium high pressure at 385 degrees.
4) Remove the mat, let cool for about five second, lift don't peel
the transfer from mat face.
5) Re-turn mat to heat press, place the foil over the mat face.
6) Close press and open press in one action
7) Peel the foil.
Method 2 - Using Hand Foiling Iron
1) Using Adventures In Names or Adventures In Art, print design and
text on Toner Transfer Paper, in reverse (flipped). You must use a laser
printer with Toner Density set on high. Print on the slick, shiny
side of Toner Transfer Paper
2) Place the mat on a flat surface. Place Toner Transfer over
the mat with the toner toward the mat. Tape one edge using masking tape.
3) Using Hand Foiling Iron, iron away from the taped edge pressing
down firmly. Iron several times to insure transfer of the toner.
4) Let cool for about five second, then lift don't peel transfer from
mat face.
5) Replace the mat to the flat surface. Place the Foil over the
mat. Tape one edge of foil using masking tape.
6) Using Hand Foiling Iron, press down firmly on the foil over area
where the toner was transferred to the mat. Press down, DO NOT iron!!!
(To iron foil will cause it to wrinkle.) Press entire area where
the toner would be, several times to insure transfer of foil. This takes
a little practice but works very well.
7) Lift foil from the end which is not taped. If everything did
not foil, lay foil back down and repeat Step 6. When assured everything
is foiled peel foil.
You now have a one-up, foil printed mat for pennies.
